Windsor only became a town in 1992, and most of its homes went up in the years right around then. Subdivisions spread out from the Town Green and along Old Redwood Highway through the 1990s and early 2000s, built fast to meet demand. That gives Windsor a very particular kind of bathroom. The plumbing and wiring are modern enough that they rarely need a full overhaul, but the finishes were chosen by a builder on a budget: a one-piece fiberglass tub and shower, a cultured marble vanity top with the sink molded in, a small builder-grade fan and a mirror glued straight to the wall. Twenty-five or thirty years later, those parts are wearing out at about the same time. Caulk lines are failing, the fiberglass is dull and scratched, and the vanity doors don't sit straight anymore. Homes near the 2019 Kincade Fire evacuation zone that were later repaired or rebuilt add another layer, with newer rooms sitting next to original ones.

Walk-in shower remodel with a glass door, tiled walls and a built-in bench

For most Windsor homes, the bathroom doesn't need to be taken back to the studs to feel new. The structure is sound, so the budget can go into a better shower, real tile and a vanity with actual storage. When the fiberglass unit has to come out, a shower remodel with tiled walls and glass is the most common upgrade we do here. Primary bathrooms in these homes often have a garden tub that nobody uses, which makes them good candidates for a bigger walk-in shower. Reach out by phone or through the form, and we'll book a visit to look at the room and price it in writing.

Replacing Builder-Grade Fiberglass

One-piece fiberglass tubs and showers were the standard in Windsor's subdivisions because they go in fast and don't leak at the seams. Their weak point is the base. Over time, the floor of the unit flexes when you stand on it, and small cracks form near the drain, letting water reach the subfloor. Fiberglass also scratches and fades, and no amount of cleaning brings back the original finish. These units are usually installed before the walls are finished, which means a full replacement often involves cutting the unit into pieces to get it out. Once it's gone, we inspect the subfloor and framing, then build a tiled shower or install a solid, well-supported base with tiled or panel walls. The vanity often gets replaced at the same time, since a cultured marble top tends to crack around the drain after a few decades. We also replace the shutoff valves under the sink and behind the toilet while we're at it. The originals in homes this age are often the multi-turn type that seize up, and a stuck valve is the last thing you want when a supply line bursts. Homes from the same period in Healdsburg to the north often have the same fiberglass units.

Garden Tubs and Primary Bathroom Layouts

Many Windsor primary bathrooms were built around a large garden tub, often set in a corner or on a raised platform, with a separate stall shower squeezed in next to it. In practice, the tub gets used a few times a year and the shower is too small. Taking out the garden tub frees up enough floor for a roomy walk-in shower, sometimes with a bench and a niche, and the old platform space can become storage or a wider vanity. Some owners keep a soaking tub and set it inside the shower area behind the glass, a wet room that holds both without crowding the floor. With newer homes, the drain locations are usually easy to work with and the floor framing is in good shape. Ventilation is worth upgrading while the walls are open, since the original fans in these homes were often undersized for a room with a big tub and shower. Windsor issues its own building permits through the town's building division, and we handle the filing and inspections. Our tub-to-shower conversions page explains what changes when a tub comes out.
